Singapore Public Transport Guide - MRT

Typical Singapore MRT train passing through a housing estate

The MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) and LRT (Light Rail Transit) form Singapore's transit system. The Mass Rapid Transit (MRT) network is the country-wide train network that plies between 48 stations, covering business, shopping and most residential areas.

Singapore Train Fares and Timings

Trains run from 5.30a.m to 12.30a.m, every three to eight minutes, and every station has an electronic signboard that reflects the time left for the next train to arrive.

They are a cheap and very reliable mode of transportation, and the network covers most points of interest for the visitor. Buy single trip tickets at the station either at user-friendly automatic machines or from the cashier; single trip tickets cost from $0.80 to $2.00, plus a $1.00 refundable deposit (just insert your used ticket into machine to get your dollar back). All lines are integrated, so you do not need to buy a new ticket to transfer.

Note that, in Singapore, a "subway" is a pedestrian underpass under a road.

North-East Line (NEL)

The North East Line (NEL) operated by SBS Transit is the first a fully heavy metro automated driverless mass rapid transit system. A 20-km fully underground line, it consists of 16 stations covering HarbourFront in the South to Punggol in the North East. The NEL also facilitates barrier-free transfers with Sengkang LRT at Sengkang Station, existing MRT at Dhoby Ghaut Station (North South Line) and at Outram Station (East West Line).

For more information about SMRT, fare information and maps, please visit SMRT's website.

Light Rapid Transit (LRT)

The Light Rapid Transit (LRT) is a feeder service of the MRT that primarily serves the heartland housing estates. Only selected estates such as Bukit Panjang New Town and Sengkang are connected. Because the LRT is a shorter trip, fares range from S$0.60 to S$1.00.
